FREE Where to Go and What to Know -- August 31

Are you new to the area or perhaps curious about where to go for a scenic hike or bike? This FREE workshop is designed for everyone with an interest in climbing, hiking or biking in the area. Our experienced staff will cover all the basics from what to bring to where to go. We'll handout some local maps, and provide you with equipment checklists. Examples of necessary gear will be available as well. There is no need to register for this workshop. Just meet at the ORC at 7:00 PM.

FREE Kayaking at Clear Creek -- September 5

Join the ORC and the CSM Kayak Club for a day of FREE kayaking at Clear Creek. Stop by the kayak park anytime between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. This is a great way to meet fellow kayakers, learn about the Kayak Club, and give kayaking a try. We will meet by the bleachers in the kayak park. No registration necessary. See you there!

Bike Tune-Up Special -- September 7 – 11

Bring your bike in for a tune-up and save some cash. We are offering full bike tunes for only $20 for one week only! Stop by whether you are riding a $100 Huffy or a $4,000 downhill bike. We'll be sure to give your ride lots of love. See our website for a complete description of what our tune-up includes. If you aren't sure if you need a tune or not check out our website; we also have a list of questions that should help you determine if your bike needs work. Bikes are completed on a first come first serve basis and we will only be accepting the first 40 bikes that come in so don't wait until Fri. afternoon to stop by.

FREE Backcountry Cooking -- September 7

No more ramen! Are you tired of eating mac and cheese and ramen in the backcountry? Let us teach you how to cook like a pro on a single burner stove. We will teach you a variety of recipes including how to bake in the backcountry. Simply show up prepared to cook and sample some good food. This workshop meets at the ORC and begins at 7 pm.

Rock Climbing at North Table Mountain -- September 12

Join the ORC for a day of climbing and fun. We can teach you how to belay and introduce some climbing techniques. If you're an experienced climber come and enjoy some fun in the sun and meet fellow climbers. Transportation, equipment, and instruction will be provided for only $5. All abilities are welcome. Registration deadline: Wednesday, September 9th by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting for all participants 9/9 at 9:00 PM at the ORC.

FREE Basic Bike Maintenance Workshop -- September 14

This is the first in the series of Bike Maintenance Workshops we will offer this fall. This workshop will focus on the basics of bike maintenance. We will cover how to change a tire, adjust your brakes, minor derailleur adjustments and more. Feel free to bring your bike and ask specific questions. Our experienced mechanic will share his knowledge and tips to keep your bike in excellent condition. This FREE workshop will begin at 7 pm and will be conducted at the ORC.

FREE Climbing Movement & Technique 1 -- September 14

This exciting new class will be held at the climbing wall and will help any climber who wants to learn proper techniques to maximize their performance. This class will focus on the basics of balance, body position and footwork. These techniques will advance your climbing level by enabling you to conserve your strength and climb more efficiently. The class will be held from 8 pm to 9 pm. Cost: $FREE

Rock Climbing at Clear Creek -- September 19

Join the ORC for a day of climbing and fun. We can teach you how to belay and introduce some climbing techniques. If you're an experienced climber come and enjoy some fun in the sun and meet fellow climbers. Transportation, equipment, and instruction will be provided for only $5. All abilities are welcome. Registration deadline: Wednesday, September 16th by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting for all participants 9/16 at 9:00 PM at the ORC.

FREE Climbing Movement & Technique 2 -- September 21

This class is an extension of the first Movement and Technique class. This class will focus on the more advanced techniques of balance, body position and footwork. These techniques will advance your climbing level by enabling you to conserve your strength and climb more efficiently. The class will be held from 8 pm to 9 pm. Cost: $FREE

FREE Advanced Bike Maintenance Workshop -- September 21

This is the 2nd and final workshop in this series of Bike Maintenance Workshops we will offer this fall. This workshop will focus on techniques like bleeding disc brakes, derailleur adjustment and much more. Feel free to bring your bike and ask specific questions. Our experienced mechanic will share his knowledge and tips to keep your bike in excellent condition. This workshop will begin at 7 pm and will be conducted at the ORC.

FREE Ski Pass Blitz Day -- September 25

Back by popular demand for one day only! We will have representatives from Copper, Winter Park, Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, A-Basin, Breckenridge, Loveland, Steamboat, Echo Mtn. and Eldora on campus to give you the best deals on season passes. This year the resorts are bringing sweet schwag, so we will be giving away door prizes including free lift tickets! The doors will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Student Center Ballrooms A & B.

FREE Professional Climbing Clinic -- September 26

Stop by the climbing wall and learn from the pros. We will have professional climbers from the area on campus to work with students. Drop in anytime from 10 am – 12:00 pm to learn about strength and technique, and 1:00 – 3:00 pm for classes on mental focus in climbing. The pros are bringing demo equipment for all to try and a raffle for gear at the end. Don't miss this chance to meet and learn from some of the best climbers in the Front Range. Use this as an opportunity to refine your skills before the Bouldering Competition.

REEL Rock Tour -- October 2

This year's film, Progression features Chris Sharma's Jumbo Love, Kevin Jorgeson's Ambrosia, & Tommy Caldwell's El Cap and much more. This show will be $6 for the students (MUST PRESENT A BLASTERCARD AT THE DOOR) and will cost anyone else $12 at the door. The show will take place in the Green Center in Friedhoff Hall on the Colorado School of Mines Campus. Doors open at 7 pm don't be late!

Bouldering Competition -- October 3

Don't miss our fall Bouldering Competition! We will have categories for various ability levels including recreational, intermediate, and advanced. Competitors will also be divided into men's and woman's categories. With lots of great prizes and give-a-ways this event is guaranteed to be a good time. As always we will close the wall a week prior to the comp. so that we can put up 30 exciting new bouldering problems. The registration deadline is October 2nd at 6 pm; space is limited so don't wait until the last minute to register. Cost is $15, sign up at the ORC. The comp will run from 12:30 pm to approximately 5:00 pm.

FREE Wilderness Survival -- October 5

The ORC will be conducting a wilderness survival workshop to make sure you have the skills to thrive in the backcountry. We will share techniques field tested by our staff. This workshop will include shelter building, staying found and much more. This workshop is free and will meet at the ORC at 7 pm; registration isn't necessary.

Caving -- October 11

Join us as we go underground to explore the mysteries of Fulford Cave. We will spend the day climbing and crawling through underground caverns while observing stalactites, stalagmites, cave bacon, and other cool cave formations. Registration deadline: 10/7 by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on 10/7 at 9 pm. The cost for this trip is $10 for students and $12 for non-students and includes transportation and some equipment.

Backpacking: Canyonlands National Park -- October 16 - 20

Come explore one of Utah's greatest geological areas including Canyonlands National Park, Moab and the surrounding region. We will spend a couple days backpacking in Utah's beautiful Canyonlands National Park. Don't miss this amazing opportunity to spend time in one of Utah's most spectacular playgrounds. Registration deadline: Oct. 12th by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on the 12th at 9 pm; there will also be a second pre-trip meeting on the 14th at 9 pm. The cost for this trip is $140 for students and $168 for non-students and includes transportation, equipment, camping fees and entrance fees to Canyonlands National Park.

Wilderness First Aid/First Responder Recert. -- October 24 - 25

The ORC is brining the Wilderness Medicine Institution to campus to instruct this essential course. The Wilderness Medicine Institute is a part of NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School) and is the leader in wilderness medicine. If you enjoy exploring the mountains it's only a matter of time before you'll need to respond to a medical emergency. Don't be caught unprepared. This hands on training will provide you with the tools and skills to make difficult medical decisions in remote settings. This fast paced intensive 16 hr. course will teach you how to recognize, treat and prevent wilderness emergencies. For more information or to register stop by the ORC or call 303-273-3907. Course Cost: $170 and worth every cent. Sign up early space is limited. CPR is not included in this course. This course acts as a recertification if you are a current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and have current CPR.

Lead Climbing Class -- October 26

Test your nerves and hone your skills with our lead climbing class. In this class you will learn how to read routes, clip into protection, recognize a back-clip and z-clip, belay a lead climber and catch a lead fall. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. This class is designed to teach you how to sport lead climb. This class will begin at 7:00 pm. Register at the ORC before 10/22 at 6:00 PM Cost $5

"In Deep" Ski Movie & Costume Contest -- October 30

The Outdoor Rec. Center and Powder 7 team up to bring you this year's best ski movie, "In Deep" by Matchstick Productions (MSP). MSP took a new approach to this year's movie choosing to document the experience surrounding the sport of skiing. Highlights from the film include big mountain lines and some of the fastest skiing you will see in the Alaskan backcountry, Checkout the trailer at http://www.skimovie.com/index.php/msptv/in-deep-teaser/ The evening will include a Saucer Boy Costume Contest (to honor the late Shane McConkey), candy, snacks, soda and schwag. Halloween costumes welcome & encouraged. The movie will be shown on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Coolbaugh 209 (campus map - http://www.mines.edu/MapsDirectionsParkingInfo). Doors open at 7 pm, don't be late. Cost: $5 for Mines students (with ID) and $10 for everyone else.

Ski/Snowboard Tuning Special -- November 9 - 13

It's go time! We are really excited about the upcoming ski season so we have decided to give everyone a great deal on ski and snowboard tuning and waxing. Bring in your gear and let us get you primed for the slopes. Bring your skis or board in between Mon. the 9th and Fri. the 13th and we will hand tune and wax. Equipment will be completed on a first come first serve basis. This special can't be combined with any other specials. The ORC reserves the right to stop accepting equipment at any point.

FREE Ski Tuning Workshop -- November 16

Are you tired of skiing or riding beat up gear? Stop by the ORC for this FREE workshop and let our staff teach you how to give your skis or board a high-quality hand tune and wax. We will teach you maintenance basics and show you how to use our workbench, so next time your gear needs some lovin' you won't have to pay someone to do it for you. This workshop will be held at 7 pm at the ORC.

Avalanche Beacon Training Class -- December 8

Avalanche beacons are a necessity for backcountry winter travelers. Having a beacon and knowing how to use it can save someone's life (maybe your own). Join the ORC for a quick class and learn how to use an avie beacon and basic rescue techniques. We'll spend a short time in the ORC reviewing theory before we step outside to put the techniques into practice. This course is great for those with little or no and backcountry experience and veterans alike. If you plan to plow through some backcountry powder you don't want to miss this class. Register at the ORC by Tuesday December 8th at 6:00 pm. The class will take place from 6 to 8 pm at the ORC. Cost is $5. Bring your beacon if you have one, otherwise beacons will be provided.

Avalanche Awareness -- December 4

Ever wondered what causes avalanches, and what you can do to be better prepared to deal with them? Come to our avalanche awareness course to learn the basics. This course is a 2 hrs. classroom session and will be taught by the Alpine Rescue Team. This class will be FREE; no registration is necessary. The class will begin at 7 pm and will take place in the Student Center in Ballrooms D & E on the CSM campus; don't miss this great opportunity.

Rappelling Class -- December 6

Need a little excitement in your life? Have you always wanted to learn how to rappel? This class will be held at the climbing wall and will teach you how to rappel from our elevated platform. Sure to be loads of fun for climbers and non-climbers alike. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. Register at the ORC before Thursday 12/3 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 2 to 4 pm. Cost $5

Backcountry Hut Trip -- January 10-12th

Are you a fan of waist deep powder? Then spend a few days in a backcountry hut with the ORC. The hut is easily accessible, has indoor plumbing, an outdoor sauna and has great backcountry skiing and riding a short distance away. These factors make Jay's ideal for an amazing backcountry experience. We will spend the days hiking to and skiing/riding great backcountry terrain. The cost is only $140 which includes transportation, lodging, instruction and some equipment. The registration deadline & the first pre-trip meeting is Thursday December 10th at 6pm. Another pre-trip meeting will take place Saturday January 9th at 10 am. Previous backcountry skiing/riding and avalanche knowledge encouraged but not required. Participants must be in good physical condition and be a competent skier/rider.
