Learn to Telemark Class -- January 23rd

The ORC will be joining forces with the Mines Telemark Club to provide you with an exceptional learning experience. Have you always wanted to give Telemark skiing a try? Telemark skiing is rapidly growing in popularity and is a great way to get into backcountry skiing. This is the perfect opportunity to take your winter sports skills to the next level. We will meet at the ORC the morning of the 23rd and commute together in a van to Copper Mountain where we will spend the day learning to free our heels. Some skiing experience is required for this class (contact Rob if you have questions about this 303-273-3907). The registration deadline is Wed. 1/20. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting 1/20 at 9 pm. Cost: Student $20, Non-Student $24 and includes a free tele ski rental (availability based on sizing of equipment, ORC day rentals are normally $20). Trip cost does not include a lift ticket however discount lift tickets are available for $53.

Ski Tuning Special - $2 Off -- January 25–29th

It’s go time! We are really excited about all the powder that has been falling and as a result, we have decided to give everyone a great deal on ski and snowboard tuning and waxing. Bring in your gear and let us get you primed for the slopes. Bring your skis or board in between Mon. the 25th and Fri. the 29th and we will tune and wax them $2 off the regular price. Don’t miss out on this super great deal! Equipment will be completed on a first come first serve basis. This special can’t be combined with any other specials. Learn to Snowboard Class -- January 30th

Ever wanted to learn how to snowboard? Then join the ORC for this exceptional opportunity. No experience is required. Our ORC staffers will be sharing their knowledge and helping you hit the slopes. With a low student to instructor ratio you’ll get all the attention you need to excel in no time. We’ll be meeting at the ORC on the morning of the 30th and commuting together in a van to Copper Mountain. The registration deadline is Wed. 1/27. Are you tired of skiing or riding beat up gear? Stop by the ORC for this FREE workshop and let our staff teach you how to give your skis or board a high-quality hand tune and wax. We will teach you maintenance basics and show you how to use our workbench, so next time your gear needs some lovin’ you won’t have to pay someone to do it for you. This workshop will be held at 7 pm at the ORC.

Ice Climbing in Clear Creek -- February 6th

Want to take your alpine skills to the next level? Frozen waterfalls are just what the doctor ordered. Come let us show you the ropes. The cost for the trip; Student $10 & Non-Student $12. Cost includes transportation, instruction, and most equipment. The registration deadline is 1/3 by 6 pm. There is a mandatory pre-trip meeting on Wed. 1/3 at 9pm at the ORC.

SCUBA Certification Course -- February 10th

The ORC will be hosting a SCUBA Certification Course throughout the semester which will be taught by Twin Dolphins Diving Inc. The class will begin on Feb. 10th. Classes will then be held in the Mines Pool on Wednesday nights from 7:30-9:30 pm; all necessary equipment will be provided. The dates are as follows: 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, (NO Class 3/17 Spring Break), 3/24, 3/31, 4/7, 4/14 & 4/21. This class will require some homework and studying. The cost to students will be $263.00 plus $25 for certification card and cost of open water dive (TBA). The registration deadline is Feb. 10th at noon. Avalanche Level 1 Course -- February 13-15th

Ever wondered what causes avalanches, and what you can do to be better prepared to deal with them. Take an Avalanche Level 1 course to get educated. This course will be taught by the Colorado Mountain School and is some of the best training you will ever get. This course is 3 days long and will teach you how to travel in and around avalanche terrain, decision-making strategies, rescue skills, and the human factors involved in avalanches. The classroom portion of the class will take place at the Colorado Mountain Schools Climbers Lodge in Estes Park. The field portion of the course will take place in Rocky Mountain National Park All participants should be comfortable on backcountry touring gear, either touring skis (AT or Tele) with skins, a split-board with skins or snowshoes. The cost for this course is: Mines Student $305.00 & Non- Student $315. This price includes training and avalanche gear (beacon, probe shovel) that will be needed on the course. You will be responsible for transportation up to Estes Park as well as the cost of spending the night at the CMS Climbers Lodge in Estes Park (or another location in Estes Park). The CMS Climbers Lodge is where the class will be taught; you can sleep there for an additional $25 per night (to be paid directly to CMS; for more details check out there website at http://www.totalclimbing.com. The deadline to sign up for this trip is February 10th but don’t wait because this trip has limited space, sign up early. Prior avalanche awareness classes or knowledge is a good start but not required on this trip.

Bouldering Competition -- February 27

Don’t miss our Spring Bouldering Competition! We will have categories for various ability levels including recreational, intermediate, and advanced. Competitors will also be divided into men’s and woman’s categories. With lots of great prizes and give-a-ways this event is guaranteed to be a good time. As always we will close the wall a week prior to the comp. so that we can put up 30 exciting new bouldering problems. The registration deadline is February 26th at 6:00 pm; space is limited so don’t wait until the last minute to register. Cost Students $20 & Non-Students $24, sign up at the ORC. The comp will run from 11:00 pm to approximately 3:00 pm.

Spring Break Backcountry Hut Trip -- March 14-16th

Are you a fan of waist deep powder? Then spend a few days in a backcountry hut with the ORC. The hut is easily accessible, has indoor plumbing, an outdoor sauna and has great backcountry skiing and riding a short distance away. These factors make Jay’s ideal for an amazing backcountry experience. We will spend the days hiking to and skiing/riding great backcountry terrain. The cost is only: Students $125 & Non-Students $150, which includes lodging, instruction and some equipment. The cost does not include transportation to and from the trailhead. The registration deadline is Friday March 5th at 6pm. The first pre-trip meeting will be Monday the 8th at 9 pm and the second pre-trip meeting will take place Wednesday March 10th. Previous backcountry skiing/riding and avalanche knowledge encouraged but not required. Participants should be in good physical condition.

Backcountry Skiing/Riding -- March 27th

Are you tired of skiing and riding the resorts? Why not spend the day earning your turns. This is a great opportunity whether you’re a regular backcountry rider or just deciding to venture away from the groomers. Everyone loves powder and that’s what this trip is all about. The registration deadline is Wed. 3/24. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on 3/24 at 9pm at the ORC. Cost: Student $20, Non-Student $24. This cost includes transportation and some equipment. Previous backcountry skiing/riding and avalanche knowledge encouraged but not required. Participants should be in good physical condition.

FREE Basic Bike Maintenance Workshop -- April 5th

This is the first in the series of Bike Maintenance Workshops we will offer this fall. This workshop will focus on the basics of bike maintenance. We will cover how to change a tire, adjust your brakes, minor derailleur adjustments and more. Feel free to bring your bike and ask specific questions. Our experienced mechanic will share his/her knowledge and tips to keep your bike in excellent condition. This workshop will begin at 7 pm and will be conducted at the ORC.

Last Weekend for Ski and Snowboard Rentals -- April 16-19th

Hit the slopes one last time before the end of the season. This is the last weekend the ORC will be renting skis and snowboards.

FREE Advanced Bike Maintenance Workshop -- April 19th

This is the 2nd and final workshop in this series of Bike Maintenance Workshops we will offer this spring. This workshop will focus on techniques like bleeding disc brakes, derailleur adjustment and much more. Feel free to bring your bike and ask specific questions regarding your ride. Our experienced mechanic will share his knowledge and tips to keep your bike in excellent condition. This workshop will begin at 7 pm and will be conducted at the ORC.

Rock Climbing -- May 1st

Come with the ORC for a day of climbing and fun. We can teach you how to belay and introduce some climbing technique, or if you’re an experienced climber just come and enjoy some fun in the sun. Transportation, equipment, and instruction will be provided for only $10 for students and $12 for non-students. All abilities are welcome. Registration deadline: Wednesday 4/28 by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting for all participants 4/28 at 9:00 PM at the ORC.

Wilderness First Responder Medical Certification --May 17–26th

The ORC is brining the Wilderness Medicine Institution of NOLS to campus to instruct this essential first aid course. The Wilderness Medicine Institute is a part of NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School) and is the leader in wilderness medicine. If you spend time in the backcountry it’s only a matter of time before you’ll need to respond to a medical emergency. Don’t be caught unprepared. This hands on training will provide you with the tools and skills to make difficult medical decisions in remote settings. This fast paced intensive 80 hr. course will teach you how to recognize, treat and prevent wilderness emergencies. For more information or to register stop by the ORC or call 303-273-3907. Course Cost: $600 for students & $620 for non-students and worth every cent. Lodging options are available for an additional cost. Sign up early space is limited. CPR is included in this course.
