You first have to register with the Office of Student Activities. At this point you will be considered a Special Interest Club. After you have been in good standing with the Office of Student Activities for one year, you may then write a petition to become a club sport. This is discussed in detail in the Club Sport Handbook on page 5.
How do I join a club sport?
First you need to make sure that the sport in which you wish to participate is a club sport at the school by checking the list of clubs at http://recsports.mines.edu/clubsports/pages.html. If it is, you should visit the club's webpage and email the club president for more information.
Can I receive PA credit for participating in club sports?
Yes, you can. You must first complete PA 101 & 102. Also your club sport must be approved to receive PA credit. Please speak to your club president about signing up for PA credit. More information can be found in the PA Credit Application.
What is the Club Sport Council?
The Club Sport Council is a group of elected and appointed students along with the Intramural and Club Sports Intern. They are expected to provide certain services for the club sports, which are discussed on page 7, 10, and 11 of the Club Sports Handbook.
How are the members of the Club Sport Council elected / appointed?
The election process for the Club Sport Council is discussed in detail on page 8 of the Club Sports Handbook.
Can my club sport have a coach?
Yes, as long as you follow the guidelines on page 12 of the Club Sports Handbook.
Where can I find a coach and what do they need to do to participate with the club?
It is up to you and your club to find a coach, but they must be approved by the Director of Intramural and Club Sports. One good resource is your league. Before your coach can participate with the club, they must fill out and complete all of the necessary paperwork discussed in the Coach Packet.
Are there any requirements to participate in a club sport?
Yes, there are. Pages 14 - 24 of the Club Sports Handbook are dedicated to this subject.
Is there any paperwork that must be completed to participate in a club sport?
Yes, a Participant Packet. This packet contains all of the necessary forms that must be filled out prior to participating with a club sport.
What services does the Club Sport Office provide for my club?
The services provided by the Club Sport Office are discussed on pages 25 - 31 of the Club Sports Handbook.
Is there a regular meeting that the club must attend?
Yes, each club must have at least one club member attend the monthly Club Sport Council meeting. Each club's officers must also meet with the Director of Intramural & Club Sports once per month while in season.
When are the monthly meetings?
The days and times of the meetings will be decided at the first Club Sport Council meeting of the year. Please watch for an email with the date and time of the first meeting.
I am an officer for my club. Can I spend club funds?
If you are the treasurer for your club then, yes, you can spend club funds. All other officers are not allowed to spend club funds. More information about spending club funds can be found on pages 42 - 47 of the Club Sport Handbook.
My club needs to travel to an away game. What do we need to do?
Your treasurer will need to complete a travel itinerary. Once this is completed, they will need to bring the itinerary and a list of the expenses to the Club Sport Office and fill out a Travel Advance form with the Club Sport Council Treasurer. More information can be found on pages 48 - 50 of the Club Sport Handbook.
My club needs to spend money on an item but we do not have enough money. Can the Club Sport Council cover the overdraft until we can raise more money?
If your club does not have enough funds to cover an expense, whether it is for equipment, fees, or travel, you will be unable to make the purchase or pay for the expense until your account has the necessary funds. In other words do not spend money you do not have.
Are there dues to be paid to be part of a club sport?
Yes, club sports are required to charge a minimum of $100 in annual dues per member.
Does my club have to fundraise?
Almost certainly. It is likely that your club will not receive the amount of money that is necessary to run the club without fundraising.
